Introduction 
Learning & development aims to improve performance by enhancing individuals’ skills, knowledge & working capacity. Business needs to conduct continuous learning & development processors for its employees to adapt to the highly volatile modern business environment. 

Definitions,

“Learning & Development is defined as the process of ensuring that the organization has the knowledgeable, skilled & engaged workforce it needs (Armstrong, 2014)”


“The purpose of learning & development as an organizational process is to aid collective progress through the collaborative, expert & ethical stimulation & facilitation of learning & knowledge that support business goals, develop individual potential, & respect & build on diversity (Harrison, 2009)”

 Learning & development is a basic HR function which helps organizations to improve their performance. Companies required to have the best team with them. In today's highly competitive business world companies need to take competitive advantages by preparing their resource with the best use & efficiency. Hence organizations need to be armed their employees with the latest tacit explicit knowledge, skills & strategies. At the same time, organizations must prepare their potential employees for higher responsibilities & for future business. Hence continuing employee development is vital in the long term for business. Identifying opportunities & threats they have to face in future can be done throughout the development process. In order to prepare the employees, the institute can recognize gaps & can develop staff to the required levels.

In the global context, Airbnb the largest lodging & homestays provider in the world had taken successful moves towards learning and development of its employees. In 2017, the company had spent 34.1 hours & $ 1,296.00 per employee on learning & development. The company used peer learning & manager driven learning process. It helped the company to fill the skill gap and affected performance positively.


In the local context, The Trade Bank PLC has a separate department to conduct learning and development programs. The said department has well designed various types of learning & development programs for employees based on their job roles. These programs are conducted starting from trainee to the top management of the company. A report revealed that the company had spent over Rs. 250 million per annum on employee learning & development.

Conclusion
 As per the prevailing literature & global practice, learning and development affect organizations towards sustainability & success. The continuous process of learning and development reduces lapses & increases organizational performance. Organizations take competitive advantages through developing their employees to sustain in the business.
